Completing a degree at Lamar University has never been easier. The Center for Distance Education has announced the start of registration for students seeking online courses for the winter mini-term and Spring 2007. Courses for many disciplines are available online and are as close as your computer with flexible class schedules to fit any busy lifestyle.
Online registration for distance education courses for the spring semester began Monday, November 13, for students who are not able or choose not to attend regular classes on campus. Students who register for online courses can do so by going to the Lamar University home page at http://www.lamar.edu and clicking the Admissions icon. Students registering for online classes are fully eligible for scholarships and financial aid in the form of federal loan and grant programs.
“Lamar University offers a wide array of courses in several disciplines that are now available online,” said Paula Nichols, director for the Center for Distance Education. “These courses are flexible, affordable and fully accredited toward the students’ degree plans.”
According to a survey conducted by the BABSON Survey Research Group and the Sloane Consortium, online education appeals most to older students who have family responsibilities and often work outside the home. The majority of these students are undergraduates seeking to earn that elusive bachelor’s degree. Most chief academic officers who were polled about online education believe the quality of online instruction is equal to or superior to that of face-to-face instruction.
Students interested in online courses will have a special orientation prior to the start of the semester. Students must be able to access the Internet and are encouraged to have a broadband connection. Full technical support via email, telephone and online are available as well.
Lamar has been expanding its online course offerings since 1998 and has recently added its first complete online degree program; the Master of Science in nursing is currently available with three more complete programs scheduled for approval and delivery during summer 2007.
