4/8/2009

Kevin Dodson, Lamar University professor of philosophy and interim director of the honors program during the 2008-2009 academic year, has been selected as the result of a national search to serve as the permanent director of the University Honors Program.   Dodson is no stranger to the program, having served as its assistant director from 2003-2008.

“I’m very excited about this selection,” said Dodson.  “We’re currently in the process of refining policies and reorganizing our student organization.”

Dodson has spent his entire professional career at Lamar University, joining the faculty in 1991 after receiving his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He attended the University of Washington, where he graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and was accepted into the school’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Since joining Lamar, Dodson has taught philosophy and has focused his coursework on the history of modern philosophy, moral and political theory, and the philosophy of history.  With support for his work from the German Academic Exchange Service and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Dodson has presented papers at both national conferences and international congresses.

Also a prolific author, Dodson has published and edited books, refereed articles, and reviewed notes and letters.  He served as coeditor of “Online Encyclopedia of Enlightenment and Revolution” and senior editor of “Ways of Knowing:  Classical and Contemporary Readings in the Philosophy of Knowledge.”

Dodson is the founder of the Society for the Philosophy of History and has served on a variety of councils and committees including Honors Council, Faculty Senate, Texas Association of College Teachers, and University Library Committee.
