Bruised But Not Broken Support Organization will sponsor a Candlelight Vigil Walk and Reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16 on the campus of Lamar University.
Bruised But Not Broken is a student organization at Lamar University. Founded in October 2008 by Antoinette Mays, the organization’s objective is to teach members of the community how to identify healthy relationships as well as recognize the warning signs of abusive relationships.
“Bruised is a support group for students and faculty who have suffered from abuse, other people who have been impacted by abuse, and students whose jobs after graduation will involve working with these people,” said Mays, herself a survivor of assault and a member of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
Open to the community, the walk will begin at the Setzer Student Center at 5:30 p.m. and end at the John Gray Center near the pond. A reception and informational session in the Mason Room in Building B of the John Gray Center will immediately follow the walk.
Information will be provided by Victims Assistance of Jefferson County, Family Services of Southeast Texas, the Lamar University Health Center, the Rape Crisis Center of Southeast Texas and others. Many of the participants will be family members and loved ones of those who died due to domestic violence.
“October is Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. This event is our statement that we stand with the national council against violence,” said Mays. “Although this is our first walk, we want to make this into an annual event.”
