The Writing Center at Lamar University will join a national celebration of the teaching of writing, "The National Day on Writing," Tuesday, Oct. 20, with a special celebration from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the first floor of the Mary and John Gray Library. The event is free and open to the public.
In cooperation with the National Conference of Teachers of English, the center is sponsoring one of hundreds of officially sanctioned Internet "Writing Galleries" featuring essays on a variety of subjects.
Lamar’s Writing Center Gallery features writings about the art, work, and personal significance of writing. Postings to the galleries were selected from thousands of entries from across the country.
The Writing Gallery officially opens today (Oct. 20) and will remain open until June 2010 at galleryofwriting.org. LU Writing Center Director Melissa Hudler will introduce winning writers Jesse Doiron, Jessica Honard, Rebecca Matlage, Jim Sanderson, Summer Sanderson and Tammy Temple. After the Writing Gallery is opened, these winning writers will read from their essays.
In addition to these readings, the event will feature a number of Lamar poets and short story authors presenting their recent work from Pulse, the university student literary journal. These writers include Mary Bawell, Chad Belyeu, Jason Duncan, Ashlynn Ivy, Summer Sanderson and Tara Tatum.
To open the event, composition awards will be presented to Lamar students Chanquilla Gordon, as Most-Improved Writer in a Composition Course; Brittany Holmes, Most-Improved Writer in a Literature Course; and Kristian Toliver, Most-Improved Writer in a Non-English Course.
This celebration of writing became official Oct. 8, 2009, when the U.S. Senate affirmed the National Day on Writing. A similar resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. Refreshments will be served after the awards ceremony.
