The main theme of our research is the development of low-cost, low-tech methods for solving environmental problems. One area of our research interests involves preparation of transparent sols of metal oxides containing nano and sub micro sized particles and use of these particles for photocatalytic degradation of hazardous environmental pollutants such as complex cyanides, nitrophenol, methyl tert-butyl ether, etc. Currently we are also investigating bacterial disinfection of water using sunlight mediated phtocatalytic oxidation with transparent metal oxide sols. Implications of this work are broad because many diseases originate from contaminated water.
