8 Unlikely Book Characters That Every Student Relates To

College can be unpredictable though, no matter how unique your situation is, there’s likely a book character that’s been through it. While none of these eight characters go through college, most of us can relate to them.

1. Bilbo Baggins: The Hobbit

Chosen by a mysterious wizard, Bilbo Baggins takes on a strange and perilous journey. Initially, he doesn’t want to go. Like most Hobbits, Bilbo is the kind of guy who just wants to stay home and eat. The adventure turns out far better than he expects, however, and he comes back with a dragon hoard of treasure.

As quests go, attending college can be intimidating and we can be reluctant or afraid to accept a new opportunity. But if we channel our inner Bilbo, by stepping outside our comfort zone, we may be shocked to find how adventurous we really are.

2. Dr. Watson: The Hound of Baskervilles

Dr. Watson is a very smart man. He is, after all, a doctor. Unfortunately, next to the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, Watson can seem a bit obtuse. Every college student has a friend who is, somehow, miles ahead while everyone else in the class is completely confused. Like Dr. Watson, we’ve all had that embarrassing moment where we’ve missed something that later seems so obvious.

3. Arthur Dent: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

The earth is destroyed and Arthur Dent is thrown into the universe with nothing but a towel and his alien best friend. College is like that sometimes. You may have no idea what’s going on but at least you brought towels with you.

4. Hermione Granger: Harry Potter

Hermione’s greatest fear is being expelled and grades are usually her highest priority. She would rather fight a monster than fail a test. We may not all be quite as studious as Hermione but many of us would admit to considering academic failure a fate worse than death.

5. Edmund Pevensie: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

Edmund literally joins the dark side because they have candy.

Most of us would not go that far (probably), but good food can be hard to come by as a college student on a budget. Joining an evil magical tyrant for candy sounds pretty reasonable when you’ve eaten ramen for dinner for the fifth time in a row.

6. Elizabeth Bennet: Pride and Prejudice

Elizabeth Bennet spends the first half of Pride and Prejudice judging her friends and sisters for falling for, honestly, any guy with money. Most college students probably have at least one friend who is not the most level-headed when it comes to relationships. And being on the outside looking in can be both awkward and exasperating.

7. Winston Smith: 1984

1984 follows Winston Smith as he learns that the government - which he always knew was bad - is straight up evil. College is often the time and place where we realize that the world is not as simple as we once believed.

8. The Little Engine: The Little Engine That Could

No, seriously. Every college student has moments of doubt. We wonder if we’re in the right major, believe the right things, or have the right friends. Sometimes, earning a degree can seem like a huge mountain we’ll never get over. Like the Little Engine, those of us who succeed are no strangers to persistence.
