Top Five Things I Look For in a Dancer During an Audition
An audition is one of the most uncomfortable situations for a dancer. Auditions are a necessity for most dancejobs. Most auditions are held in a foreign space, away from the dancer’s support system (friends, family and teachers), and the movement that is new to the dancer’s body. Here are a few things that may help you in your next audition. These are a few things I look for in a dancer during an audition.
1. Come Prepared– I want dancers that have wonderful work ethic. The audition starts when you walk in the door and not when you start dancing. Dress appropriately and bring all attire/shoes needed for the audition.
2. Confidence– In the studio, I want a dancer that is confident when they move. Something that catches my eye is when a dancer goes with their instinct (or memory). Don’t follow your neighbor. I really don’t mind if a dancer makes a mistake during an audition. Seeing a dancer fully commit is a beautiful thing. I love to see a dancer move with such confidence that when they mess up, I believe that everyone else is wrong.
3. Attentive– Eye contact is important. Body language is so telling. If I feel that you are not interested or not wanting to be there, how would you be in the studio day after day? Show me that you want to be there.
4. Ask Relevant Questions– Some auditions do not allow you to ask questions.
If it is allowed and you need clarification about the movement, be sure to ask. Address the areas you need themost help. Pick something that helps you get through the material in its entirety.
5. Apply Feedback– Choreographers look for particular things from dancers. Normally a choreographer will give you specific things they are looking for in the movement. These are little nuances they want to see you do while doing their movement. This is a test. To pass it you will need to pay
particular attention to these moments and provide effort to these moments.
I hope these five things will help you in your next audition. Just remember that even though you did not get cast, does not mean that you are not a beautiful dancer. During that day, you were not what that choreographer was looking for in that piece. Keep at it.
