Nursing - Success Tip

Nursing Success Tip

From the beginning of my time at Lamar University as a Nursing major, I found encouragement and support from the Reaud Honors College to help me achieve educational success that will allow me to realize my career goals as a nurse.

I stepped out of my comfort zone and challenged myself to do things I would have otherwise never done. For instance, while serving on the Honors Student Association as the co-intramural sports chair, I helped recruit students for our teams. I grew as a leader by getting over my fear of asking questions and by gaining confidence working with others. I know those skills will help me navigate Nursing school successfully.

The honors college also empowered me to participate in Model United Nations. Being a delegate opened my eyes to the importance of effective communication to best advocate for others. In my career as a nurse, I hope to set the standard of always being there to listen to my patients as well as advocate for them.

Petitioning for my nursing classes for an honors credit also gave me a unique opportunity to dive deeper into the ethics and moral qualms that nurses in the field often face. For one of my projects for my Fundamentals of Nursing course, I presented how cultural competency with patient care can be integral to decision making.

By joining the Reaud Honors College, you will also be presented with opportunities to expand your knowledge in your subject area...and even better, in areas you may never have thought would be part of your journey!

Sincerely,

Patricia Castanon
