Doblin scholarship in mathematics and science established
The Lamar University Foundation has announced an endowed scholarship has been established for the College of Arts and Sciences. The Dr. Stephen A. and Suzye Doblin Scholarship in Mathematics and Science was established by Lamar alums Chuck (’72) and Becky (’71) Mason in recognition of Stephen Doblin’s service to the university upon his retirement. The scholarship will provide funding for students majoring in mathematics or science at Lamar.
“The faculty and staff of the department of mathematics are honored that the Masons have chosen to award the first Doblin scholarship to a mathematics major,” said MaryE Wilkinson, chair of the mathematics department. “In consultation with Dr. Doblin, we selected Mayra Alejandra Sequra for this award. This award will permit her to be a full time student in the fall. She loves studying mathematics and this summer will be working as a tutor in the mathematics lab.”
Stephen Doblin, Lamar University provost and vice president for academic affairs from 2001-2015, retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel, following more than 23 years of service. He earned a bachelor’s, masters and doctorate degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, all in mathematics. He joined the faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi attaining the rank of full professor and serving as the chair of the department of mathematics and later as the dean of the college of science and technology. Doblin has served on the boards and advisory councils for several Southeast Texas institutions and organizations, including president of the Texas Council of Chief Academic Officers as well as president of the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanuel of Beaumont. He has taught large sections of freshman mathematics each fall.
Suzye Doblin, earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Alabama where she was the campus representative to the Associated Women Students, a member of Mortar Board, the national honorary society recognizing college seniors, president of Sigma Delta Tau sorority and the Interfraternity Council and table tennis champion. Predominantly now a wife, mother, grandmother, she was also an elementary and middle school mathematics teacher, entrepreneur and realtor.
