LU honors 4 with Plummer Awards as top August grads
Lamar University honored 4 students with the Plummer Award, recognizing them as the top male and female graduates in Lamar’s 2015 August graduating class. Lamar University president Kenneth Evans presented the awards during the August 22 commencement ceremony. Plummer Awards honor the late Otho Plummer, who was chairman emeritus of the Lamar University Board of Regents and a longtime board member.
Jennifer Carter, a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler, earned the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences. She is the daughter of Don and Mary Bartley and the spouse of Wayne Carter. Carter was named to the President’s List. Her hobbies include playing tennis. Future plans include pursuing a career as a secondary math schoolteacher.
Rebekah Grohn, a graduate of Hardin-Jefferson High School in Sour Lake, earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She is the daughter of Stephen and Susan Grohn and the fiancé to Bryan Mitchell. Grohn is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Alpha Kappa Delta National Sociology Honor Society. She served as president of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, vice president of the Psychology Association of Lamar Students, secretary of Lamar University Study Abroad Psychology Organization and served as a Lamar University Endzone Angel for two years. She earned the Charles and Susan Gordon Scholarship, Sigmund S. Greenburg Scholarship, two Academic Excellence Awards from the College of Arts and Sciences and was named to the Deans’ and President’s List. Her hobbies include exercising, reading, swimming, playing tennis, cooking and spending time with her fiancé. Future plans include earning a doctorate in psychology to work with children with eating disorders. She would eventually like to build a hospital that concentrates on treating eating disorders.
Emma Lanier, a graduate of Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, earned the Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing. She is the daughter of Jerry and Donna Lanier. Lanier is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Her hobbies include reading and watching movies. Future plans include pursuing a Master of Business Administration at Lamar.
Randall Bardin, a graduate of the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, earned the Bachelor of Social Work. He is the son of Randall and Janet Bardin and spouse of Kaitlin Bardin. He is a member of the Gamma Omicron Chapter of the Alpha Delta Mu National Social Work Honor Society and served as vice president of the Social Work Student Association. He is the recipient of the Academic Excellence Award form College of Arts and Sciences and was named to the President’s List. His hobbies include collecting comic books. He serves as a 2nd class petty officer in the United States Coast Guard Reserve and a reserve firearms instructor at Marine Safety Unit in Port Arthur. Future plans include pursuing a Master of Social Work at the University of Houston.
