Neighborhood partnership hosts ‘A Day in the Park’
The newly formed Greater South Park Neighborhoods Partnership is inviting residents of South Park and neighboring communities to “A Day in the Park” Sept. 12. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Alice Keith Park, at East Lavaca and Highland Avenue.
“We’re coming together to show our support for South Park,” said Norman Bellard, assistant to the president for community relations at Lamar University and chair of the Greater South Park Neighborhoods Partnership. “It will be a day to get to know our neighbors, and enjoy some food, music and fun together as we celebrate our community.”
“In addition to enjoying some free food, we’ll have activities and lots of information provided by organizations that support the residents of South Park,” Bellard said. There will be live music by the Jimmy Simmons Band and the Jazz Innovators, Bellard added.
“We hope those who call South Park home, and those who want to invest in its future, will come out and join us. It really is about getting to know one another and working together to make South Park a stronger community,” he said.
Lamar University, Education First FCU, ExxonMobil, City of Beaumont, Entergy, Chartwell’s, Lamar Institute of Technology, HEB, Market Basket, and Zummo’s are sponsoring the event.
The Greater South Park Neighborhoods Partnership, which meets monthly on the Lamar University campus, has begun to address issues facing the community. The partnership includes civic, business, education, social and spiritual leaders of the greater South Park neighborhoods, said Brian Sattler, public relations director for Lamar University and a member of the partnership committee. The partnership is working with city officials and elected representatives, he said.
“There are many challenges facing residents of South Park, but we believe that by working together we can address them,” Bellard said. “Our motto is: Reimagine. Rebuild. Revitalize. It is our goal to help the people of South Park build a more prosperous future by working together to meet challenges and create opportunity.”
“Our ultimate goal is a safe, dynamic, progressive, healthy community,” Bellard said. “A community residents are proud to call their home."
