Lamar University announces 2016 Summer Camps

Lamar University invites students of all ages to a variety of summer camps to be held on campus this summer. Camps are offered for a variety of ages and interests with both daily and residential opportunities.


Lamar Nursing Nightingale Experience

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

X-Plore LUEE Summer Camp

June 27 – 30, 9am-3pm for girls entering 7th and 8th grade who are interested in electrical engineering. Activities will center around robotics, electronics, communications and more. Learn to Swim offers

Group Sessions, eight 30-45 minute lessons, June 6-16, June 20-30, and July 18-28. Private sessions, four 30-minute lessons, July 11-14, and August 1-4.  Sessions cost $65. Registration May 24-25, 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Sheila Umphrey Recreational Center and will continue throughout the summer based on class availability. STEAM Summer Art Camp

July 18-22, students entering grades 9-12. Camp is an intensive week of exciting hands-on integrated learning activities and art projects that places “Art” back into the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum. Registration and details: lamar.edu/art or 880-8141.

All-State Choir Camp 

June 26-29, students entering grades 9-12. Camp introduces students to the repertoire for the All-Region and All-State Choir auditions. Registration and details: lamar.edu/choircamp or 880-8144.

Band Camp I and Band Camp II/Percussion Camp

June 12-16 for students entering grades 7-8; June 19-23 for students entering grades 9-12. Students participate in band rehearsals, chamber ensembles, private lessons, and master classes. Registration and details: lamar.edu/bandcamp or 880-8148.

Drum Camp

July 11-15 for students in grades 6-12. Expanding on Band Camp II/Percussion Camp, participants at Drum Camp will learn all aspects of marching percussion to prepare them for school marching band. Registration and details: lamar.edu/music or 880-8148.

Summer Dance Intensive

July 11-22, junior intensive for students who have completed grades 3-7; senior intensive for those who have completed 8th grade+ and adult students. 32nd Annual Youth and Young Adult Gospel Music Retreat

The Psalm 150 Gospel Choir presents its 32nd Annual Youth and Young Adult Gospel Music Retreat, July 21-23, on the LU campus. Youth from ages 8 to 18 are invited to participate. Articulation Boot Camp

July 5-28, designed for children with speech delays/impairments who are enrolled in speech therapy at school. This camp is an intensive program designed to help children who have difficulty pronouncing speech sounds. Registration and details: Tammy Soniat, 880-8171.

Spirit Team Camp

SPORTS CAMPS

Soccer Camps

Providing the best training environment and camp experience possible, Lamar Soccer Camps blend expert technical and tactical training with a friendly, outgoing staff of coaches to ensure that campers have an unforgettable week of soccer. Coaches include current and former Cardinal players as well as top college, club and high school coaches. 

Lil’ Cardinals Camps (ages 5-6) $125 per week. Sessions June 6-10, June 13-17, July 11-15. 

Full-Day Summer Camps (ages 7-13) $260 per week. Sessions June 6-10, June 13-17, July 11-15.

Softball Camps

Elite Prospect Scrimmages (Ages 13 and older): June 9, Aug. 21. ($100 per session) Athletes will participate in 90-minute games on teams put together by the LU coaching staff. Each athlete is guaranteed to play two games in the day with time served at both a primary and secondary position.

Small Group Hitting Camps (Ages 13 and older): June 14, July 6, Aug. 8 (3-5 p.m. each session) ($100 per session).  Individual instruction with different drills, focuses and instructors each session. Live hitting each session. Separate drills and workouts for slappers. Indoor facility available so session will happen rain or shine. Visualization training each session.  Sessions will be limited to the first 15 athletes.

Small Group Pitching Sessions (Ages 13 and older): June 14, July 6, Aug. 8 (6-8 p.m. each session) ($100 per session). Individual instruction with different drills, focuses and instructors each session. Full pitching each session. Indoor facility available so session will happen rain or shine.  Sessions will be limited to the first 15 athletes.  Must be able to provide own catcher!

Youth All-Skills Camp (Ages 6-12) July 26 (Offense Session 9-11 a.m., Infield/Outfield Session noon-2 p.m., Pitching/Catching Session 3-5 p.m.) ($60 per session). Offensive Session: Drills for bunting, slapping and hitting. Infield / Outfield Session: Drills for defensive play in the infield and outfield. Pitching / Catching Session:  Spin, velocity, accuracy and conditioning drills for pitchers.  Full session of catching drills to train a high-level catcher. Participants will NOT be catching pitches during this session.  Pitchers must supply their own catchers.

Elite All-Skills Camp (Ages 13 and older) Aug. 20 (Offense Session 9-11 a.m., Infield/Outfield Session noon-2 p.m., Pitching/Catching Session 3-5 p.m.) ($60 per session) Offensive Session: Drills for bunting, slapping and hitting. Men’s Basketball Camps

Lamar University Men’s Basketball Camp teaches the fundamentals of the game in a fun and competitive environment. Players will learn one-on-one moves, team concepts and defensive skills that will help them as they progress as a player. Campers will also learn the importance of proper shooting techniques from LU coaches and players.

Experienced trainers are available at all times. Each camper is covered by health and accident insurance during camp hours. Insurance coverage is secondary to primary insurance. Completed indemnification and medical treatment forms are required at registration.

Women’s Basketball Camps

Elite Camp (11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 11; open to girls varsity-level players) (Cost $100) The Robin Harmony's Lady Cardinal Basketball Camp teaches the development of fundamental basketball skills using a fun and competitive environment. Players will learn one-on-one moves, team concepts, three -on-three concepts and two man games with game concepts. Campers will also learn the importance of proper shooting techniques and how to utilize the triple threat position.

Individual Camp (9 a.m.-3 p.m. June 14-16; 9 a.m.-noon June 17; open to girls ages 6-17) (Cost $185) Players will learn one-on-one moves, team concepts, three-on-three concepts and two man games with game concepts. Campers will also learn the importance of proper shooting techniques and how to utilize the triple threat position.

Team Camps (One session June 17, two sessions June 18; open to girls varsity and JV teams) (Cost $100 per session) During Team Camp, players will showcase these concepts and their skills in a team setting. Each team will be guaranteed two games.

Football Camps

LU football camps provide fun and educational instruction that will cover basic football fundamentals. Camps are divided based upon age and ability to ensure the right camp for each participant. A youth camp and high school aged camp will be hosted at Provost Umphrey Stadium:

Specialists Camp (9th – 12th grade) $100, June 5; Youth Camp (1st – 8th grade) $120, June 6-7.

Several camp dates are available this year including camps that will be hosted by high schools in the Houston and Dallas area. Satellite Camps are: Prestonwood Christian Academy, Plano, Texas (9th-12th grade) $40. June 8; West Dallas Camp, South Grand Prairie HS (9th-12th grade) $40. June 9; Central Texas Camp, (9th-12th grade) $40. June 10; North Houston Camp, Conroe HS, (9th-12th grade) $40. July 15; and South Houston Camp, Clear Falls HS (9th-12th grade) $40. July 15

Baseball Camps

Baseball Camps provide the opportunity for young children to work on fundamentals and technique with Lamar University baseball coaches and players. Chose from: Session I (Half Day) – Ages 6-12, June 13-16, 9 a.m.-noon, $175, or Session I (Full Day) - Ages 6-12, June 13-16, 9 a.m.–4 p.m, $250       

Children and teens of all ages have the chance to learn hitting and pitching fundamentals as well as dig deep into the arts.  All groups are broken down by age. Choose from Session II (Competitive Hitting) – Ages 6-18, June 20-22, 9 a.m.-noon, $175, or Session II (Competitive Pitching) – Ages 6-18, June 20-22, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., $175.

Tennis Camps

Lamar University Tennis Camps are designed for the beginner to intermediate level athlete. The emphasis is on equal time devoted to the basic skills, while creating a team environment and grouping athletes according to  skill levels.  Camps will be held: Monday, June 6 - Thursday, June 9; Monday, June 20 - Thursday, June 23; Monday, July 11 - Thursday, July 14; Monday, July 25 - Thursday, July 28; and Monday, August 8 - Thursday, August 11. All camps are from 9 a.m. – Noon each day. Ages 10-18.

COST: $150.00 per camper per week; $500 for all five weeks. The cost for returning campers is $125 per week. For more than one family member, the cost is $100 per child.

Volleyball Camps

The Skills Camp will focus on the individual fundamental skills of volleyball. Individual Skills Camp I: Completed Grades 7th-9th, June 6-8, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m., $200 (includes lunch)       

The Youth Camp will introduce basic fundamental skills of volleyball. Youth Camp: Completed Grades 3rd-6th, June 9-10, 9 a.m.–noon, $80      

Setting and Attacking: Any age level, June 13-14, 5 p.m.–6 p.m., $40. Serving and Defense Clinic: Any Age Level, June 13-14, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m., $40. Half an hour will be spent training setting, half an hour will be spent training attacking. Half an hour will be spent training serving, half an hour will be spent training defense.

Setting and Attacking II: June 15-16, 5 p.m. – 6 p.m., $40, Any Age Level. Serving and Defense Clinic II: June 15-16, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.,  $40, Any Age Level. Half an hour will be spent training setting, half an hour will be spent training attacking. Half an hour will be spent training serving, half an hour will be spent training defense.

Individual Skills Camp I: July 4-6, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., $200 (includes lunch), Completed Grades 7th-9th. The Skills Camp will focus on the individual fundamental skills of volleyball.

Advanced Skills Camp: July 11-13, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., $200 (Includes Lunch), Complete Grades 9th-11th. Camp will focus on individual skills, as well as systems for High School Level athletes.

Skills & Game Series: July 6, 13, 20, and 27. Complete Grades 6th-12th  - $60, 4:30 p.m.- 6 p.m. (Grades 6-9), 6:30 p.m.- 8 p.m. (Grades 10-12). Series will meet one night a week for three weeks.
