Veterans Affairs, Disability Resource Center support disabled veterans
Lamar University Veterans Affairs and the Disability Resource Center, recently hosted the second Veterans Appreciation BBQ to show appreciation for veterans, and raised funds that have been contributed to Heroes on the Water, a charity organization that works with disabled veterans.
“It was an opportunity to show our veterans support and to do something different for them on campus that’s fun and productive that will take them out of their stressful environment,” said Kyle Mutz, director of LU’s Disability Resource Center.
Mutz expressed his appreciation for veterans: “I’ve always had a passion for helping our military veterans. I think the great thing is that we brought the whole campus together for a great collaborative event that did some great things for students on campus.”
The $1,426 contribution will help the organization take veterans on a kayak-fishing trip that will allow them to decompress from stress and more.
The Heroes on the Water (HOW), coordinated therapeutic programs provide alternative therapeutic options to established Post Traumatic Stress Disorder treatment providers. The force multiplying benefits of the HOW program combined with traditional forms of recreational and group therapy can break down barriers and enhance the treatment of these disorders. Heroes on the Water helps America’s warriors and veterans from all branches of the United States military unwind by fishing from kayaks.
