Basic leather working class offered
Did you know leather is one of man’s earliest and most useful discoveries? It protected early man from the elements. Later, it was used to make sandals, clothes, gloves, buckets and more. During the industrial age, it was used to make belts for machinery. Due to its durability and comfort, leather has been used for seating throughout the history of transportation and furniture.
Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum is excited to announce its next Leather Working Class scheduled for September 23 at 10 a.m. Students will get to make a phone case while learning how to cut, tool and dye leather. They will add their own creative design. The class will be presented by Shane Granger, a self-taught leather worker who makes products such as knife sheaths, pistol holsters and belts. Students can see Granger’s work on his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/shane.granger.79). The cost is $125 with a $50 nonrefundable deposit. There is room for 10 people to take the class. Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown is a replica of the boomtown that grew up around the Spindletop oil fields in the early 1900s. The entrance fee is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and $2 for children under 12. Located on US 69 at Jimmy Simmons Blvd in Beaumont, the museum is open Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
