Babe Didrikson Zaharias Foundation establishes seventh endowed scholarship for LU students
The Babe Didrikson Zaharias Foundation is continuing their support of Lamar University students with the first installment of $7,500 for this newly created, endowed scholarship in honor of Suzanne and Jennifer Pate. The scholarship will be funded over seven years for a total gift of $50,000.
The foundation has previously established six endowed scholarships and provided nearly $280,000 in funding to Lamar University. Each scholarship was established in honor of members within the local community and has provided support to athletes in a variety of sports.
Past honorees in order of endowment include, John Gray, Ben and Julie Rogers, Thad and Margaret Johnson, W.L. Pate, Sr., Milton Bell and Bob West.
“We’re incredibly honored to partner once again with the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Foundation,” said Marco Born, director of athletics. “Babe Zaharias was a champion among all athletes and a role model for aspiring student athletes. This scholarship will provide an opportunity for many years to come.”
A check was presented on Friday, September 21, 2018 to Lamar University by the president of the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Board, W.L. Pate, Jr. The foundation was established in 1969 to preserve and promote the legacy of Babe. It built the museum in 1976 and since then, has championed support for the woman athlete.
