Statisticians from across the State of Texas to attend conference at Lamar University
More than 60 statisticians will be on the Lamar University campus for the annual Conference of Texas Statisticians April 5 and 6.
The COTS meetings afford Texas statisticians the opportunity for social and intellectual exchange on a yearly basis. Senior and junior statisticians as well as students present their research talks or posters at the COTS. These meetings also stimulate increased chapter membership as well as visibility of the statistical profession in the state of Texas.
“One of the highlights of the conference is that the San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association sponsors a national award,” said Kumer Das, professor and university scholar at Lamar University and 2019 president of the Conference of Texas Statisticians. “This year the Don Own award recipient is Dr. Christine Anderson-Cook of the Los Alamos National Laboratory.”
In addition to speakers from university’s across the state including Rice University, Southern Methodist University, Sam Houston State University, the University of Texas and Texas A&M University, there will be 10 oral presentations and 17 student abstract poster presentations covering a range of topics including, “The Role of Statistics in the Fight against Alzheimer ’s disease,” “Predicting Bitcoin Return Using Extreme Value Theory,” and “A Critical Look at the Automatic SAS® Forecasting System,” to name a few.
The Conference of Texas Statisticians (COTS) was established at the annual American Statistical Association (ASA) meeting in Houston in 1980. The first COTS meeting was held in Waco in 1981. Beginning in 1985 the Texas Chapters of the ASA were invited to set up the Council of Texas Statisticians with representatives from each Texas Chapter. The conference has been held every year since.
