Calling all film students and enthusiasts. Start the new year out on the right creative foot by attending a screenwriting workshop featuring the talented Hollywood screenwriter Tom Vaughan, writer of the horror film “Winchester” and film professor at the University of Houston. The workshop will take place on Saturday, February 8, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Communication Building located on the campus of Lamar University in Room 103.

Vaughan, whose work includes writing screenplays for, among others, Phoenix Pictures, TNT, MTV Films, Castle Rock Entertainment, ABC, NBC, CBS, Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures and Disney, will be the featured speaker at the day long workshop and will share his insider tips on how to be successful in and navigate the industry. He has developed screenplays for Matthew McConaughey, Nicolas Cage, Barry Sonnenfeld, Chow-Yun Fat and many others.

Vaughan studied at the University of Houston with Broadway legend Jose Quintero and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Albee. It was his work as a writer and director in Houston theatre that got him recognized by Hollywood.  

“Winchester,” the film Vaughan co-wrote starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, about the infamous Winchester Mystery House, opened nationwide in 2018. He has just finished work on the untitled horror film about one of the most haunted places in the world, the HMS Queen Mary in Long Beach. Most recently he set up his spec scripts “Daddy’s Girl” with Covert Media for a fall shoot and “Most Wanted” at Miramax with director Ruben Fleischer of “Zombieland” and “Venom.”

Cost for the workshop is $75 for non-Lamar University students, $25 for LU students not a Communication major and free for LU Communication students. Participants can register for the event at lamar.edu/communication. Seating is limited, so please register early. All proceeds benefit the Summer Film Project, an ongoing short film workshop in the department for film-interested students.
