Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum is hosting the Second Annual Printing Day on Feb. 29 beginning with a blast - the gusher re-enactment at 1 p.m.

The afternoon event will celebrate the Linotype (pronounced "line-o-type"), which completely transformed the communication of information in the early 1900s. Its impact was comparable to the internet’s impact today.

Although Linotype machines were revolutionary, technology began to supersede the Linotype, and the machines were scrapped and melted-down by the thousands. Today, very few machines are still in existence. However, Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown houses a working Linotype.

Guests will have the opportunity to watch the feature-length documentary, “Linotype: The Film,” which is centered around the Linotype type casting machine, called the "Eighth Wonder of the World" by Thomas Edison. The film tells the charming and emotional story of the people connected to the Linotype and how it impacted the world. Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitors Center will provide popcorn and water.

Afterwards, all visitors will have the opportunity to see a working Linotype and other working printing equipment at Lamb’s Print Shop on the grounds of Gladys City. Operators will share their knowledge of the machines and answer any questions visitors have about the printing industry. Kids will enjoy a special printing craft in the yard outside the print shop.
