The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University will present a free Saxophone Summit for area saxophone students on Monday, February 3, from 5-8 p.m. in the Jimmy Simmons Music Building on the Lamar campus.

Special guests will include Jody Espina, president, founder and chief designer of JodyJazz and Chedeville products. Espina will present a workshop titled “Choosing the Right Mouthpiece,” in which he will discuss the do’s and don’ts of choosing and purchasing the correct saxophone mouthpiece. 

“This information is critical to the success of young saxophonists,” noted Rick Condit, professor of music at Lamar University and coordinator of the event. “The saxophone mouthpiece is the least expensive component of the sax yet is also the most important in creating the beautiful sound the instrument is noted for. Mr. Espina has more than 20 years of experience in mouthpiece design and his products are extremely popular world-wide.”

Also performing at the event will be the Kazoku Saxophone Quartet. This classical saxophone quartet, led by Dan Gelok, instructor at the University of Houston, will play a variety of music from Bach to modern. Their concert, which begins at 7 p.m. will also feature a composition titled In Memoriam, by noted composer and Lamar alum, Joel Love.

The six o’clock hour of the event will give the students the opportunity to test-play various JodyJazz and Chedeville mouthpieces, and saxophones provided by the Conn-Selmer company and Swicegood Music.

También se presentará en el evento el Kazoku Cuarteto de Saxofones. Este cuarteto de saxofones clásico, dirigido por Dan Gelok, instructor de la Universidad de Houston, tocará una variedad de música desde Bach hasta moderna. Su concierto, que comienza a las 7 p.m. También presentará una composición titulada In Memoriam, del reconocido compositor y ex alumno de Lamar, Joel Love.

La hora del evento a las seis en punto dará a los estudiantes la oportunidad de probar varias boquillas de JodyJazz y Chedeville, y saxofones proporcionados por la compañía Conn-Selmer y Swicegood Music.
