LU’s Science & Technology Building receives design distinction
The design of Lamar University’s Science & Technology Building has advanced to the final rounds in Lab Manager’s inaugural Lab Design Excellence Awards competition.
Lamar University’s Science & Technology Building, designed by Gensler and built by Vaughn Construction, is 83,000-square feet with seven instructional labs, 14 research labs and a project instruction room upstairs that overlooks a large maker space lab. The building, the first academic building to be constructed on the LU campus in 40 years, opened in April 2019. The project also included a freestanding, state-of-the-art greenhouse and adjacent pollinator garden to be used for research and instruction.
“Our judges were quite impressed with the high caliber of submissions that we received for this competition, especially in its very first year,” said MaryBeth DiDonna, lab design editor, Lab Manager. “They felt that the Lamar University Science and Technology Building was worthy of recognition for its design and execution.”
As a result of the distinction Lamar University Science & Technology Building will be included in a feature article on the Lab Manager website as part of a series on all of Lab Manager finalists.
“It is exciting to know that our project has been recognized for excellence by a national industry publication and I expect there will be more to come as the project is considered for more awards,” said Katherine Miller, assistant vice president of Lamar University’s planning and construction. “I appreciate the hard work by the project team and am proud to say that Lamar University’s Science & Technology building can hold its own in terms of quality, functionality and technological innovation when compared with any other higher ed STEM building in the country.”
Miller said the design of the Science & Technology Building was also showcased at the 2018 Association of Texas College and University Professionals conference and received numerous accolades from conference attendees.
