The Lamar University Department of Theatre & Dance is pleased to present the 2021 Helen and Larry Rose Dance Awards to recipients Brittany Gonzales for Outstanding Technical Dancer and Ashley Hawkins for Outstanding Contemporary Dancer. The accolades, created and funded by Dr. Larry and Helen Rose of Houston, were awarded as part of an annual scholarship set up by the couple to recognize the hard work and dedication by dance students.
“This award was a surprise and means a great deal to me,” said Hawkins. “I would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Rose for recognizing my hard work.” Gonzales stated that “This award will financially help me with tuition, and it is such an honor to be a recipient of the Rose Award.”
Dr. Rose is an honor graduate of Lamar University and is a retired orthodontist. He participated in the Student Honor Court and other Lamar University organizations during his time as a student and has previously served as the president of the Lamar University Alumni Association.
In addition to the dance awards established in 2019, the couple founded the Pearl and Aaron Rose Award in 1973 in honor of Rose’s father, a prominent Beaumont businessman. The Rose’s also support The Houston Methodist Hospital Society for Leading Medicine and the Platinum Program, with emphasis on the Department of Cardiology.
