Lamar University announced the awarding of 100 scholarships, each valued at $1,000, to high schools across Southeast Texas. This initiative, totaling $100,000, underscores the university's commitment to the local community and its appreciation for those who have supported Lamar University over the years.
"As a part of this celebration, we want to take the opportunity to thank those who have supported Lamar University and been advocates for us to prospective students,” Lamar University President Dr. Jaime Taylor said. “What better way to celebrate our birthday year than to share with the local high schools who have trusted Lamar University with their bright young students."
The scholarships were presented to high school counselors representing schools throughout Southeast Texas. These counselors will have the privilege of selecting deserving students to receive the scholarships.
"Our goal is to celebrate our centennial with the schools who have supported LU throughout the years while providing another opportunity for students to attend LU," Executive Director of Admissions and Aid Deidra Mayer said.
A notable aspect of this scholarship program is that there are no specific requirements for students to receive the scholarship. Instead, it is intended for schools to select students they deem most deserving.
"Our intent is that the school chooses a student that they feel is most deserving. In addition, the student selected will receive automatic admission and be celebrated as our centennial scholar,” Mayer said.
This initiative exemplifies Lamar University's commitment to its community and its dedication to making higher education accessible to deserving students. With these scholarships, the university seeks to encourage and support the educational aspirations of young talent across Southeast Texas.
