Lamar University recognizes Sergio Mendez, a senior Biology Pre-Med major from Nederland, Texas, as the First-Generation Student of the Month for March.
Mendez, a Southeast Texas Legend Scholar, has dedicated his college career to both academic excellence and community involvement. His experiences shadowing professionals in clinics and hospitals solidified his passion for medicine, and he has actively engaged with student organizations such as the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and MedLife to deepen his knowledge in the field. Beyond medicine, Mendez also nurtures his creative and leadership skills through involvement with the Honors Students Association, Helping Hands Club, and the Hispanic Student Association.
In addition to his extracurricular activities, research has played a significant role in Mendez’s journey. His work in chemistry and psychology has led to notable achievements, including a first place award at a local research competition. His dedication to education and community service highlights his commitment to inspiring others—especially his younger sister and fellow first-generation students—to pursue their dreams without boundaries.
“Being a first-generation college student as a Mexican-American is one of the greatest blessings, and I am beyond grateful to my family for their sacrifices that have given me this opportunity to succeed," Mendez said. "It is an honor to be a trailblazer, paving the way for others in my community especially my sister and showing our dreams do have not boundaries.”
Lamar University’s First-Generation Connections program supports students whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year degree in the U.S. The program helps students overcome academic, social, and personal challenges by building a strong campus network.
