Kayla Laird received the history department's 11th Annual Student of the Year Award in the Spring 2024 semester. She was honored at a banquet held at the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum. Congratulations to her on her achievement!
Dr. Tina Kibbe, assistant professor, was named one of three recipients of the Lamar University Merit Award for 2024. The award recognizes junior faculty for their outstanding teaching.
Dr. Jeff Forret was named 2023 University Professor. The designation has honored one distinguished senior faculty member every year since 1972. It was known as the Regents' Professorship from 1972 to 1995. Previous winners from the history department were Ralph Wooster (1972), L. Wesley Norton (1980), Paul Isaac (1981), Naaman J. Woodland, Jr. (1989), John Storey (1990), John Carroll (1991), and Ronald H. Fritze (1996).
Dr. Jeff Forret, a history professor at Lamar University, has been awarded a State Historical Society of Iowa Research Grant to support his research on a book about the history of the Upper Mississippi River region, focusing on the dispossession of Native Americans and African American citizenship loss through the Dred Scott decision.
