Piper Professor Award Nominations

The Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award Foundation annually honors ten (10) professors during the current academic year for “their dedication to the teaching profession and for their outstanding, academic, scientific, and scholarly achievement.” Along with his colleagues throughout the state, President Evans again has been invited to recommend one distinguished Lamar faculty member to the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation of San Antonio for consideration as a 2019 Piper Professor. Historically, the Faculty Senate's Faculty Issues Committee has solicited nominations from the colleges and then recommended one nominee to the president.

The 2019 required nomination form can be found here: Piper Professor Award Nomination Form

  • Part A is to be completed by Lamar University, the nominating institution, but information will be needed from the nominee.
  • Part B is to be completed by the nominee.

These prestigious awards are to “give recognition to the teaching profession rather than to research, publication, administration, or other such related activity, although these criteria will also be considered.” Nominees must be current full-time faculty; former Piper Professors are not eligible for consideration. Faculty who are selected for the award not only receive a plaque designating the recipient as a "Piper Professor” but also will receive a cash honorarium of $5,000 and a gold commemorative pin.

President Evans and the Faculty Senate hope for university-wide participation during the nomination process.

Nominations and/or applications are due no later than 12:00pm on Friday, October 26, 2018. All nominations, including self-nominations, are to be submitted either to Dr. Cheng-Hsien Lin (chlin@lamar.edu) or to Dr. Kaushik Ghosh (kghosh@lamar.edu) who co-chair the Faculty Issues Committee. In turn, our nominee and her or his supporting materials are due to the Piper Professor Selection Committee by November 16, 2018.

The 2019 Piper Professors will be announced in San Antonio on May 1, 2019.
