Loan Counseling and Master Promissory Note (MPN)

What is Entrance Counseling?

Entrance counseling is designed to help you (the borrower) understand what it means to take out a student loan. During counseling, you will learn things like:

  • How the loan process works
  • Your rights and responsibilities as a borrower
  • How to manage educational related expenses
  • Other financial resources to consider to help pay for your education

You are required to complete entrance counseling before receiving a federal student loan disbursement. The requirement will be placed on your Self-Service Banner or at StudentAid.gov.

What is Exit Counseling?

Exit counseling is required any time you withdraw, graduate, or drop below half-time attendance (even if you plan on transferring to another school). This counseling is designed to help you (the borrower):

  • Understand your rights and responsibilities as a borrower of a federal student loan
  • Manage your loans

What is a Master Promissory Note (MPN)?

This is a binding legal agreement in which you promise to repay your loan and any accrued interest and fees back to your lender.  It also explains the terms and conditions of the loan.  This is required before you can receive a federal student loan disbursement.
