Probationary Certification Process

Requirements

  • Candidate passed the required content area examinations including the EC-12 PPR exam to be issued a probationary certificate or candidate was approved for a test exemption waiver by TEA.
  • The request for a Probationary Certificate must be initiated by the school district’s human resources representative on letterhead requesting to place the candidate on a probationary certification.
  • The letter should include the Candidate's name, Lamar University student ID #, TEA # position for hire, and grade levels and emailed to certification@lamar.edu.
  • Once the Alternative Certification office receives the hiring request from the school district the following steps must occur:
  • Candidate is enrolled into internship course. PEDG 5383 is required for Semester I and PEDG 5384 for Semester II.
  • Candidate is recommended to TEA for a 1-year probationary certificate by Lamar certification office. Probationary certificate can be renewed for an additional year if the candidate has not completed all of the coursework for the program.

  • Candidate will login in their TEAL account at tea.texas.gov
  • Complete the Probationary Certificate Application: Select Applications, Probationary Certificate Texas Program, Alternative as the Entity

Please note: Candidate must submit fingerprints to TEA if needed. If the candidate fingerprints are not on file, TEA will provide the fingerprinting application immediate after they apply for certification with TEA.


Probationary Certification (230.37)

Texas Administrative Code (state.tx.us)

  • Valid for one 12-month period
  • Limited to two 12-months periods maximum
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Participating in an EPP and internship course
  • Test Exemption waiver was approved for the appropriate content examination(s), and the PPR, or candidate has taken and passed the appropriate content examination(s) and PPR.

Please note: A candidate must meet the subject matter knowledge requirements for issuance of a probationary certificate to serve an internship in a classroom teacher assignment for each subject area to be taught. TAC (230.37)
