Instrument Model Description & Capabilities Location
Fluorometer Shimadzu RF6000 Measures intensity and wavelength distribution of visible spectrum fluorescence after light excitation.  This can be used to identify the presence and amount of molecules in solution, quantify concentration over time for kinetics analysis, and produce conventional and 3-D fluorescence spectra. ST 259
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) ThermoFisher Nicolet iS50 The FTIR uses interferometry to record information about a material placed in the IR beam. The Fourier Transform results in spectra that analysts can use to identify or quantify the material. Patterns in spectra help identify the sample, since molecules exhibit specific IR fingerprints ST 259
UV-Vis Spectrophotometer (UV-VIS) Shimadzu 1700 Pharmaspec Measures light absorbance across the ultraviolet and visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Can detect and/or quantify analytes in a sample based on absorption characteristics, produce an absorbance spectrum, and measure absorbance over time for kinetics analysis ST 259
Ion Chromatograph (IC) Dionex Integrion HPIC from Thermo Separates ions and polar molecules based on their affinity to the ion exchanger, i.e., the column. Determines ionic concentrations based on area of each analyte peak. Versatile and can be used for major anions, major cations, organic acids, nucleic acids, proteins, among others. High pressure system and autosampler allow for efficient analysis. ST 259
High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) coupled with  Diode-array Detector (DAD) and Fluorescence Detector (FLD) Agilent 1260 Infinity with Shimadzu RF 20A-XS Separates, identifies, and quantifies components dissolved in liquid solvent with high analytical resolution. Determines concentration based on UV-visible and/or fluorescent photometric detection. ST 259
Gas Chromatograph (GC) with Headspace Analyzer ThermoFisher Trace 1310 with TriPlus 500 Headspace Used to separate the chemical components of a volatile sample mixture and then detect their presence or absence and/or concentration of an analyte. Headspace analyzer measures gasses in equilibrium with solid or liquid samples.  ST 259
X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) Thermo ARL Equinox 100 Characterizes crystalline structures by producing constructive interference of a monochromatic beam of X-rays scattered at specific angles from each set of lattice planes in a sample to yield XRD peaks. This provides information on structures, phases, preferred crystal orientations (texture), and other structural parameters, such as average grain size, crystallinity, strain, and crystal defects. ST 259
High-Performance Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometer (HPLC-MS) Agilent 1290 Infinity – Agilent 6460 Triple Quad Couples HPLC and MS technologies to separate solution components chromatographically before introducing them into the MS ionizer. This produces a mass spectrum as a plot of the mass-to-charge ratio of the ion signal and can be used to determine the isotopic signature of a sample, the mass of particles, and elucidate the identity or structure of a compound ST 259
Total Organic Carbon Instrument (TOC) Teledyne Tekmar TOC Fusion Uses photometric detector to quantify amounts of total organic carbon present in water samples ST 259
Particle Size Analyzer(PSA) Shimadzu SALD-7500 nano Shimadzu SALD-7500 nano measures changes in  particle size and particle size distribution of particles within a range spanning 7 nm to 800 um at one-second intervals. ST 209
Elemental Analyzer(EA) ThermoFisher FLASH SMART Determine the elemental composition of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen in a sample. ST 209
Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) Shimadzu ICPE 9820 Detects and quantifies trace levels of metals using inductively coupled plasma to excite atoms, which then emit a photometric signal to an array of detectors. This allows the instrument to measure several cations at once. ST 209
Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorometer  Thermo Scientific ARL Quant'X EDXRF Analyzer Trace elemental analysis (carbon to americium) in aqeuous, solid or petrolum-based materials.
Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting (FACS) Flow Cytometer BD FACSMelody Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) is a specialized type of flow cytometry. It provides a method for sorting a heterogeneous mixture of biological cells into two or more containers, one cell at a time, based upon the specific light scattering and fluorescent characteristics of each cell. The BD FACSMelody Automatic Cell Sorter is a state of the art cytometer capable of 8 color cell analysis and sorting. ST 209
