What is a Desk Assistant?

Desk Assistants (DA's) are the initial contact and represent the Department of Housing & Residence Life to incoming and current students at Lamar University. Whether on the phone or in person, Desk Assistants are required to be courteous and make positive first impressions.

DA's answer phone calls and emails, take messages, and make appointments for Housing staff. They interact with students who come in for appointments, answer basic questions, assist students with paperwork, and handle correspondence from various sources. Desk Assistants are paid $8.50 per hour or the current work-study rate, if qualified.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Must be enrolled full-time at LU as an undergraduate student during employment
  • Have no other on-campus employment commitments
  • Be in good academic and student conduct standing with the university
  • Must be able to fulfill one full semester of employment
  • Must be able to lift and carry items up to 20 pounds for a distance up to 200 feet

Position Requirements

  • Communicate effectively in person, on the phone, and via email with students, staff, and visitors
  • Attend mandatory trainings and orientations at the beginning of each semester
  • Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs to complete on-duty rounds and security checks
  • Troubleshoot and report facilities maintenance problems
  • Prepare written documents and complete forms
  • Navigate complex filing systems in order to file confidential information
