Hurricane season occurs between June 1st and November 30th, with August and September being the peak months of the season each year.
A hurricane is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. Hurricane winds blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm center known as the "eye." The "eye" is generally 20 to 30 miles wide; however, the storm may extend outward 400 miles. As a hurricane approaches, the skies will begin to darken and winds will grow in strength. As a hurricane nears land, it can bring torrential rains, high winds, and storm surges. A single hurricane can last for more than two weeks over open waters and can run a path across the entire length of the eastern seaboard.
When a Tropical Storm or Hurricane enters the Gulf of Mexico, forms in the Gulf of Mexico or is projected to enter the Gulf of Mexico, Lamar University will monitor and determine whether to activate the Hurricane Implementation Plan.
It is always beneficial to prepare in advance for any hurricanes or other natural disasters. Lamar University will inform students in the event of a mandatory hurricane evacuation. Cardinal Village will evacuate when the Jefferson County Emergency Management declares a voluntary evacuation.
