‘I started Lamar in 1984 and I was playing volleyball. Lamar has given me the learning skills that I needed to become a productive part of the community and I gave back by becoming a very educated social worker. I came for criminal justice but changed to social work and deaf studies and I was in the process when I was injured on the job and …I had major back surgery in the middle of getting my degree…when I was off, there was Ms. Vernice Monroe (1970-2016), she is not there today, but she checked on me…they were very patient and just a very good experience, not something I expected. I started out playing volleyball in 1984 in Lamar and that was something good.’
