‘When I was a child, my Dad (William Gates) actually taught Welding at Lamar Port Arthur. I remember going to the Gates Library for their summer library program. It was in the 80s. Then he worked in the Business Office there. I graduated from Lamar University with my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Most recently, when I went for my Master’s I was able to work, be a mom, and complete that program. I am the first person in my family ever to get a master’s degree. That way Lamar was very impactful.’
