‘I selected Lamar because, my grandparents raised me and at the time my grandfather was having some health issues, I was actually intending to go off to school. And then I ended up going to Lamar, but I was familiar with it because I have several relatives who came to Lamar, including my sister and my brother. Lamar had great some great instructors, but they also had some great Christian activities that had begun to spring up on the campus. When I arrived in 1979, I became a part of the Psalms 150 Choir, the same semester it was originally formed. And you know, playing tennis and some went to dance classes and those kinds of things that made the academic portions even more attractive because of some of the other things that were available.

Oh, I have some really great memories traveling and the gospel choir and with some other activities on campus. Meeting a lot of new people from different areas, literally not realizing how diverse the student population was for me, coming from a predominantly African American school. Then coming into the larger setting where you got to socialize and learn in an environment where there were people from literally all over the world at the campus. Dealing with people of different religions and different cultures, that was probably one of the most surprising things, and also one of the most rewarding things I can say that came along with the academics.
